As the Teacher Leader Advisory Panel begins its work in New Jersey, it becomes paramount that we are able to define teacher leaders as it applies to the new teacher leader endorsement.
Barnett Berry from the Center for Teaching Quality has laid out a vision of possibilities for teacher leadership in his new paper, Teacher Leadership and Deeper Learning for All Students. In this paper, he points out that it’s time for America’s young people to engage in deeper learning. But transforming how students learn and lead requires parallel changes in the systems that govern teacher learning and leadership. Integrating a variety of research evidence and narratives, this paper examines current reforms’ limitations, explores deeper learning’s promise, and summarizes a rich research literature about how teachers learn to lead as well as the conditions necessary for their expertise to spread.
